Bac picks up 'Beyond Beyond'

LYON, France -- Bac Films has picked up French distribution rights for Copenhagen Bombay-produced toonpic "Beyond Beyond," Esben Toft Jacobsen's follow up to "The Great Bear." "Beyond" was pitched Thursday at Cartoon Movie, the three-day toonpic co-production mart, which wraps Friday in Lyon. The 3D adventure tale turns on Johan, a boy living with his father in a boat who embarks on an underwater journey to connect with his late mother. Pic is repped worldwide by Copenhagen Bombay's international sales division, which is headed by Malene Iversen. "Beyond" has a budget of 2.8 million ($3.7 million), of which half is already in place, said producer Petter Lindblad. Deal was negotiated between Iversen and Roch Lener, managing director of Bac Films, following the toonpic's pitching session. "'Beyond' is poetic, mysterious. Its designs and colors have a softness that is reminiscent of Miyazaki's work, even if it's in stereoscopic 3D," Lener said. Production will kick off this summer. Delivery is expected for end of 2013. Iversen said she was closing further international territories. It's Copenhagen Bombay's biggest budgeted toon. The $2.2 million "The Great Bear," which was presented at various stages of development and production at Cartoon Movie, bowed in Berlin's Generation KPlus section and sold to more than 25 territories.
